“To love and be loved is to feel the sun from both sides.” – David Viscott
While Valentine’s Day is often celebrated in most countries, different cultures have developed their own traditions for this festive day of love. In some parts of the world, Valentine’s Day is observed as a day for expressing love between family members and friends, rather than that of romantic couples. Some traditions include leaving candy and gifts for children and others include acts of appreciation between friends.
Many couples, friends (shout out to the coined term ‘Galantine’s Day’), families and more choose to celebrate Valentine’s Day with dinner, a picnic or special home-cooked meal.
As a result, many restaurants offer Valentine’s Day dinner promotions and food is often presented with symbols of love like hearts and flowers. The day is filled with a constant reminder through chocolate, champagne, cards, tokens of appreciation, hearts, flowers and more. At Wickshire Senior Living, we’re keeping the holiday of love alive and feeling the sun from both sides.
Over the weeks leading up to Valentine’s Day, we shared Love Stories By Wickshire from couples at all of our communities! With so many heartwarming stories and memories had between our residents; it’s so special to have the opportunity to document these moments. Our first Love Story comes from our very own Bob and Fran at Wickshire Madison; a couple who’s been together for over 60 years. Enjoy!

Next up, we had Wickshire Blankenbaker’s very own, Wendell and Frances Hawkins! Having met in 1950, these country kids stayed in touch by letter while Wendell was serving in the military and Frances was in college. Over the years, they’ve lived in a total of 5 states and believe the secret to a long-lasting relationship is getting through your differences. We hope you enjoy Wendell and Frances’s story as much as we did!
